Maternity Dresses
It's happening! The clothes are getting a little too tight and uncomfortable to wear. The baby bump is too noticeable to hide. Yes, it's exciting, but I think I'm going to have to do some shopping. Our company policy is pretty no-nonsense about the dress code. Obviously, they aren't going to let me wear my sweat pants and my favorite oversize T-Shirt to work every day for the next six months. So, I should look for maternity dress.
On Saturday I head over to the local mall. I check the directory for the maternity and mother to be stores. Looks like this will be a quick trip - there is only one store. Knowing I will need about 10 different tops and 3 pair of pants I'm working on a pretty tight budget. Plus, I have a wedding coming up and I need a nice maternity dress without spending a whole paycheck.
I'm really blown away looking at the - forgive the pun - "New Arrivals." Yes, they definitely are cute with lot of accents around the collar and neckline. I think that's to distract the attention from the size that the belly will become. I experience serious sticker shock as I look at the prices! All the tops are in the $25 plus price range - just four tops will put a serious dent in my budget and not leave much for pants. I head on over to the clearance rack - off course they are off season, but I find a three things in the ten dollar range. I find a pair of pants on clearance and feel like I'm getting somewhere.
Where are the "affordable" evening and cocktail maternity dresses?
I decide to call it a day and driving home I remember that my Cousin Linda's baby is about four months old now. A quick call to her should give me some helpful hints about how to save money on maternity dresses and clothes. Here is the short list of money saving tips that had worked for her and also many other Moms.
1. Borrow clothes - Maternity dresses/clothes are usually worn for 6 months or less. They don't really have a chance to get worn out. Friends and family can let you know who might have clothes available.
2. Resale Shops - A great resource, but you need to be able to make quick decisions. Maternity dresses/wear goes very quickly. No time to go home and think over whether or not you want it. If you like it Grab It and Go.
3. Garage Sales - Concentrate your trips to subdivisions and communities that are built to attract young families. Go for "Community Wide Sales" if they have them in your area. It cuts down on the amount of driving around. Get your maternity dresses there!
4. Department stores - Most department stores are now carrying Maternity Wear. Check out Macy's, Old Navy, The Gap, as well as the discounters Target, K-Mart and Wal-Mart. These stores also have a selection of maternity dresses for all occasions, although small. Most of their maternity clothing is for casual wear.
5. Online shops - Do a quick search for the online retailers who specialize in Maternity Dresses/Wear.
6. eBay - This is almost one stop shopping. You can find a complete range of products and prices to fit every budget. You'll find maternity dresses for weddings, bridesmaids, cocktail parties and to relax in on the hot summer days. To make your money go farther, try to make multiple purchases from the same eBay Store to save on shipping.
Enjoy your pregnancy - and have some fun shopping for your new clothes. Be sure to pass them on after the baby is born!
